How to make soap
Hands are the workhorses of our body. They swipe on lip gloss. Brush our hair and text our messages. In all they do for us, they are never only self-serving. Our hands, make the dinner, pats the backs, waves hello, claps in thunderous applause and wipes away tears.
Isn't it time that we spoiled them a little? Follow these easy steps for giving dry, calloused, overworked hands the royal treatment. Using a few key ingredients and in just 20 minutes, you'll have gorgeous hands worth holding.
Make Your Hands Soft - To get started, remove all jewelry from your hands. Next, assemble the necessary ingredients and equipment. You will need liquid soap or shower gel (preferably all natural soap free of synthetic detergents like SLS), sugar, olive oil or a bath and body oil blend, vanilla extract, basic soy wax (available at your local super craft store), two large microwave safe mixing bowls (one with warm water and one for the soy wax) lotion and two towels. Let's begin!
CLEANSE
- The first step is easy, because you've done it since you were tall enough to reach the sink, washing your hands. Instead of vigorous hand washing gently wash them with a fragrant liquid hand soap. Be sure to get underneath your nails.
EXFOLIATE
- With hands still wet, it's time to exfoliate. Exfoliating softens callouses and removes dead skin. First warm 1/2 cup of olive oil in the microwave. You can make it as warm as you like, but not too hot, you don't want to melt your sugar. Too cool and your sugar will cool your olive oil. Of course there's nothing wrong with not heating your olive oil, but warm oil on tired hands feels incredible.
- Add your olive oil to 1 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of liquid soap and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. The sugar works as an exfoliant, the liquid soap will emulsify when you rinse off the mixture and the vanilla extract just smells good.
- Mix together your sugar scrub and cover your hands, wrists and forearms. Working your way gently toward your elbows. Use as much of the mixture as you want and pay special attention to those dry patches and callouses. Rub until mixture starts to feel "drier" and most of the olive oil has absorbed. Rinse off the sugar scrub mixture.
DIP
- Place the soy wax in one of the bowls and melt in the microwave. Be careful not to bring the wax to a boil. It should be just melted thoroughly. This is the fun part. Once the soy wax melts, plunge your hands into the bowl of melted wax. Relax and enjoy until wax starts to harden. You definitely want to remove your hands BEFORE the bowl of wax completely hardens.
PEEL and SOOTHE
- After removing your hands from the wax bowl, gently peel the dried wax from your hands. After you've thoroughly peeled the wax. Fully immerse one clean towel into the second mixing bowl filled with warm water. Wring the excess water from the wet towel and wrap both of your hands in the towel for a soothing treat.
MOISTURIZE
- Once you remove the towel, generously apply all natural body lotion on your hands to lock in moisture.
Follow these instructions and your hands will feel amazing. Repeat the process once a week to see improved results. Be sure to experiment with different body oils, body lotions and body washes. Finally, the recognition these unsung heroes deserve!

The most popular question I get is "what eyeshadow can I wear with my eye color?" Listen up, and I'll tell you.
General makeup tips for brown eyes always include browns, beige and neutral tans. Grays and charcoals look good with this eye color, as do violet and lavender. You can mix it up with a lavendar and a violet.
Khaki and olive green are a great color combination. Browns with green highlights or copper highlights are always a fun option. Try copper and even gold. If your eyes have a tinge of green, or like mine are half green, choose green eyeshadows as well.
You'll find that even though you've heard that you should never wear an eyeshadow the same color as your eyes, that brown shadow can look very good with brown eyes and green shadow can look very good with green eyes. And now for the eyeliner colors. Brown eyes always should include dark brown and black eyeliner. These are very good choices for this eye color. Don't line your black liner too thick, though. That's passé. Racoon eyes are a big no-no.
If you're trying to open small eyes, line with silver or white, especially the first third from the inside corner of your eyelid. Then finish with a dark brown.

2. Place a dot of natural, gentle shampoo on the bristle of each cosmetic brush and massage between your fingers.

Those people with brown, black, or hazel eyes and have black, brown, blond, red, or strawberry blond hair are usually have a warm skin tone and have a golden or apricot undertone. If after doing the above tests you are still unable to determine your tone, you may fall into the neutral skin tone. Neutral can wear any color and look great, however neutral tones may lean towards either warm or cool. For instance, a neutral skin tone can look great in a warm color and fabulous in a cool color or vice a versa.
So what colors are best for your skin tone? Below is a short summary, again there are always exceptions to the rule.
Cool - Consider rich, true colors. These would include black, navy, red, shocking pink, rich raspberries, deep emerald greens, royal blue, plums or pure black. Additionally wear icy tones instead of pastels for a lighter color. Cool skin tones should avoid beige, orange and gold.
Warm - Consider earth colors either crisp or muted. Normally those with a warm skin tone look great in sage greens, gold, mochas, and bronzes. For a softer color try peach, apricot yellow.
Neutral - luckily for you, all colors will look good however, as indicated above most neutral skin tones will sway one way or another, so while a warm color may look great on you a cool color may look fabulous.
Selecting the right colors based on your skin tone can add so much to your overall appearance. The right color can add sparkle to your overall being and complexion while the wrong color can leave you looking ashen and your complexion washed out.

Makeup Tips and Tricks For Cystic Acne Sufferers
Unfortunately, acne is hereditary in my family. What's worse is that cystic acne is the primary acne my family members struggle with. So from the age of about 13, I also struggled with the pain and embarrassment of cystic acne. Often I would only have one or two problem spots or blemishes, but as you probably know, cystic acne is deeply painful and can be very noticeable.
Basic Makeup Tips - I am lucky to be artistic and interested in all things artistic like makeup. So as I approached my teen years I experimented with makeup more and more. I learned ways to conceal my acne. I was so good with cystic acne concealing, that if you ask my friends, they probably wouldn't even remember that I suffered from acne at all. I feel blessed that I learned the proper way to conceal my acne. I saved myself so much embarrassment, once I learned the keys to proper acne concealing.
I do remember a few days, before I learned the best tricks, that I stayed home from school because I was so humiliated with my blemish. I don't want anyone to have that experience. I sincerely know what it feels like to be embarrassed of your skin. You avoid eye contact at all costs, you avoid basketball games and school dances, because your face is just "out of control".
I want to share with you a few of my time-tested tricks.
The first trick, is not a trick at all. And you've probably heard it before: Don't pick. I'll be candid - most acne sufferers tend to pick their acne. It's gross and difficult to talk about but I want to point it out. Once I stopped touching, prodding and squeezing at my skin, my blemishes cleared up incredibly fast. Especially with cystic acne, picking a cyst does not help. The only way for a cyst to go away is for the swelling to go down. So the better fix would be:
Take an ibuprofen. This one really works. Ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling all over the body and really truly will make a difference with an acne cyst.
Place a hot wash cloth or heat pack on the cyst. In the same way ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling, heat really helps a cyst to calm.
Get a Zeno. The Zeno Acne clearing device is a targeted heat device that is medically safe and effective especially for cystic acne. I know it's expensive. I really do, but I absolutely recommend it. It's going to save you scarring and embarrassment. It makes your acne cyst disappear in half the time any other method would. I would not recommend this if it did not work. I've been duped into so many quick fix acne treatments because I was vulnerable and wanted help. This is something I truly stand behind - I personally own one. I've also heard from so many young women I work with as a makeup artist that it works.
Now here's the top makeup products for concealing acne cysts.
Stick Concealer, the concealer that looks like a lipstick. It has the perfect consistency because it's a little thicker than most concealers. It will last longer which is key for cystic acne sufferers. The concealer needs to really bind to the inflamed skin, otherwise it will slide off and you will be red and noticeable. CoverGirl and Almay have good brands of lipstick-shaped concealer. Try those.
Powder foundation - not translucent or mineral makeup. Powder foundation like Lancome's Dual Finish powder or Clinique's Double Face matte makeup are great. The reason a powder foundation is necessary is to seal in the concealer on top of your acne spot. Put the concealer on and then pat powder foundation over the top with a sponge. I don't recommend using a brush to apply the powder. The patting motion will help bind the texture of the concealer to the powder. This means your makeup will stay put and you know you will be concealed for the whole day. Knowing that your face is smooth and your acne is invisible is such a confidence boost! The best powder foundation, in my opinion is Nars Powder Foundation. Nars wins many of the annual Allure awards and is one of my personal favorite brands.
A simple combo of thick concealer stick and powder foundation will really save you from a red, swollen acne cyst. Make sure you get a concealer brush. I am not one of those people who thinks you have to have a makeup brush. But when you're working with acne, you want to be as hygienic as possible. Instead of using your bacteria-laden fingers, use a clean makeup brush. Your acne will heal much faster if you don't flare it with dirt, oil and bacteria. My favorite is the Afterglow Vegan Concealer brush. But I'm honestly not here to push products or make you buy expensive makeup. You can very easily buy a concealer brush from Target, from Sonia Kashuk.
