Shinny thick hair isn't just for the folks with good genes -- add these hair healthy nutrients to your diet to help keep your hair strong and thick.
- Omega-3 rich foods will help you seal in your hair's shine.
- Foods That Make Your Hair Shine
The National Institutes of Health recommended that people get at least 2% of their total daily calories from omega-3 fats. Foods high in omega-3 fats include flaxseeds and walnuts, beans (soybeans, navy beans, or kidney), tofu, cold-water fish (salmon, halibut, tuna and sardines), winter squash and olive oil.
Eating fish a few times a week is an easy way to increase your omega-3 intake. Add walnuts and flaxseeds to salads, cereals and baked potatoes. If you like your nuts roasted, do so gently: in a 160-170 degree oven for 15-20 minutes to preserve the omega-3 fats.
Incorporating more beans, winter squash, and extra virgin olive oil into your diet will also get you more omega-3 and shine to your hair.
- To promote your hair's growth and slow hair loss, vitamin B rich foods can help.
Wheat and oat brans are rich in vitamin B; other B-rich foods include liver, beers, tuna, oats, turkey, bananas, potatoes, avocados legumes (beans and peas), carrots, cauliflower, soybeans, nuts, and eggs. The vitamin B family has many benefits; in addition to being an immune system booster, keeping the brain in shape and maintaining healthy skin, recent research shows of vitamin B can even aid in your weight loss efforts.
Hair loss, in males and post-menopausal women is caused by Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) , a derivative of testosterone. Testosterone converts to DHT with the aid of the enzyme Type II 5-alpha reductase, which is held in a hair follicle's oil glands. DHT shrinks hair follicles making it impossible for healthy hair to survive.
Before menopause, estrogen binds excess testosterone to proteins called globulins and lowers the free-form testosterone levels in the blood. Lowered levels of estrogen allow free testosterone levels to rise, and lead to increased levels of DHT the hormone that kills hair follicles.
Avocados and avocado oil may help prevent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from getting to your hair's follicles. Animal fat (from red meat) can lead to more DHT production and hair follicle damage. Limit your red meat consumption to keep DHT away.
- Green tea, used as a rinse, can help kill off dandruff-causing fungus.
If you drink the green tea, the caffeine in it may help slow balding, too.
Eating hair healthy is easier than ever and can help you look and feel better too.
