Want beautiful hair... naturally? Making your own shampoo and other all natural hair products will help return your hair to its natural state - shiny, happy and healthy.
Making your own natural hair shampoo is not only good for your head, it's also good for the earth and your wallet! With these easy, natural hair recipes and just a few simple ingredients, you can make your own healthy, all natural hair products that smell wonderful and cost pennies.
Shampooing is important because dust, pollution and your own natural hair oils can bring your hair down in a hurry. Greasy never looks good! That said, too-frequent washing strips your hair of its natural defenses (natural hair oil is necessary in small amounts!) If your hair isn't prone to oiliness, once every couple of days is probably enough.
There's a BIG difference in the way natural hair shampoo feels compared to drugstore or salon shampoo. Commercial shampoos generally add chemicals to create mounds of foamy bubbles so the experience feels more effective. In fact, it's not. The sensation of lather isn't really related to the amount of cleanliness at all.
So when you start using these natural hair recipes, give yourself a little time to get used to them - at least a week - so you can see the results and get comfortable with the change in texture.
Basic Shampoo for Natural Hair
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup (60ml) distilled Water
- 1/4 cup (60ml) liquid Castile Soap
- 1/2 teaspoon Apricot Kernel, Grapeseed or Sunflower oil
- 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E (or 1 capsule)
- 5 drops Grapefruit Seed extract
Additional Ingredients for Your Hair Type
- Dry or damaged hair: 1/2 teaspoon Vegetable Glycerin and 1/4 cup (60ml) Aloe Vera gel.
- Oily hair: 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar.
- Thinning hair: 1/4 cup (60ml) Aloe Vera gel.
- Dandruff: 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar and 1/4 cup (60ml) Aloe Vera gel.
Directions
Combine all the ingredients in a 125ml dark glass or PET plastic bottle. Add your choice of essential oils for hair. Shake before using.
Herbal Shampoo for Natural Hair
Adding a herbal infusion to your shampoo for natural hair will enhance the color and healthy appearance of your hair. Here's how:
- Combine 1/4 cup (60ml) distilled water with 1 tablespoon each of the appropriate herbs in a small pot and bring to a boil on the stove.
- Remove from the heat and let steep for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Strain out the herbs and use the infusion instead of the water in the basic shampoo recipe above.
Blonde Hair: Dried Calendula, Chamomile, chopped Lemon Peel
Red Hair: Dried Calendula, Hibiscus, finely chopped Cinnamon Bark
Dark Hair: Dried Lavender, Rosemary, whole Cloves
Gray Hair: Dried Sage, Rosemary, Thyme
(Note: The infusion for gray hair smells pretty "herbal", but people claim it really does bring back your original hair color if you use it daily.)
Switching from commercial to all natural products can be a bit uncomfortable at first as your hair adjusts to the lack of chemicals. It may feel like your hair is dirty for the first week or so because your scalp has to rebalance oil production now that it no longer has to cope with being stripped every time you wash. Be patient! You will see results over time, and your hair (and the earth!) will thank you for it!
