It is time for the "Simplification Overhaul" system when there is no time left to be who you are. Mary put it this way "I am one of those people who was busy and full of energy and doing so many different things. Although there were times I felt very stressed I kept going and doing until I collapsed. I had depleted my resources. I can see now that all the busyness kept me from paying attention to my own needs - now 20 years later I am finally living life my way".
The reason to simplify life is to create space for the things that matter. When you create space it is easier to get in touch with your values and what matters to you. Mary said it well when she explained that she no longer heard what she needed in order to nourish her mind, body, and soul. When we pursue a busy life style without listening to ourself that happens easily.
Here are three steps to take that will begin to put you in charge of your life again.
1. What are you tolerating that bugs you?
That is where you want to start. If you are bothered by the clutter in your home think about how to unclutter. Will you do it by yourself, or need to enlist the help of the family in tackling this job or hire an organizer? Start where you are.
2. Make the task small enough so that you can see results.
Keep the big goal (based on your values) floating in your mind but take action in the present. A few years ago I learned about the "20 minute rule" for "stuff that needs to bed done". Into that category fall the tasks of cleaning out drawers, saying NO to certain requests, social events that you no longer enjoy. Ask yourself: are there things you are doing that really do not matter much - eliminate them.
3. Get back in touch with what you value.
Go to a quiet place and take along pencil and paper. Listen to yourself and identify your values, what gives you pleasure, your feelings and soul that you could not hear when you were so busy. You will see that you start to make different choices because being in touch with your values points you clearly into the direction that you want to go. You now have goal posts. As a result it is easier to say NO to things because you make decisions based on being centered within yourself.
